Sugar Puts the Body on the Fast Track of Aging

The average American consumes more than 17 teaspoons of added sugar each day, according to the American Heart Association. That equates to 68 grams or over 53 pounds per year. A person cannot consume 4.5 pounds per month of added sugar and expect their health to thrive as they age.

When I was addicted to sugar I never considered the fact that I was an addict or had a food issue … I just loved sugar and it gave me pleasure. But looking back, I now realize just how much it had me, and wouldn’t let go.

The definition of insanity is to continue doing what you are doing, and expect to get different results … you can’t fool mother nature, which means you can’t go against God’s design and expect to stay healthy.

  1. Sugar breaks down collagen and elasticity, and increases wrinkles.
  2. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can age skin. AGE’s are compounds formed by reactions between sugar and protein in your body. A diet high in refined carbs and sugar leads to the production of AGEs. AGEs damage collagen and elastin. When collagen and elastin become damaged, the skin loses its firmness and begins to sag.
  3.  Sugar reduces the body’s ability to defend against bacterial infection.
  4.  Sugar can suppress the immune system.
  5. Eating excessive amounts of sugar may increase the risk of developing certain cancers.
  6. Contributes to weight gain, especially belly fat.

  14. Fatty liver disease. Though one may not drink alcohol, excess sugar, especially fructose, causes fatty liver disease, likened to the effects of alcohol. Fructose is a common type of sugar used to sweeten soda, candy, baked goods, cereals, and more. Fructose is almost exclusively broken down by the liver. Large amounts of added sugar in the form of fructose overload the liver, leading to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. An animal study found that feeding mice a high-fructose diet for long periods of time led to the deterioration of their intestinal barrier, liver inflammation, liver tumors, and signs of fatty livers compared to a control group. And high blood sugar levels can also damage the delicate blood vessels in the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney disease.
  15. High blood pressure.
  16. High-sugar diets have been associated with an increased risk of many diseases, including heart disease.
  17. Sugar can cause two blood proteins (albumin and lipoproteins) to function less effectively, which may reduce the body’s ability to handle fat and cholesterol.
  18. Sugar can contribute to osteoporosis.
  19. Increase uric acid levels which are a risk factor for heart and kidney disease.
  20. Many reports say that sugar increases inflammation. Inflammation can cause numerous health issues, including inflammation in the brain. The main connection between sugar and inflammation: if a person eating a diet high in sugar consumption, they are most likely eating foods like donuts, dairy, and meat, and consuming a lot of saturated and trans-fat that drives inflammation.
  21. Increases the risk of developing arthritis.
  22. Increases the risk of impaired memory and developing Alzheimer’s disease.
  23. Works against proper thyroid function.
  24. Sugar can impair the structure of DNA, and change the structure of a protein. Sugar has been shown to accelerate telomere shortening, which increases cellular aging.
  25. Harms microbiome, the gut bacteria and overall intestinal health.
  26. Increases the risk of developing ulcerative bowel and Crohn’s disease.
  27. Increases the risk of developing leaky gut.
  28. Minimizes the body’s ability to use vitamins and minerals … sugar can deplete the body of these valuable nutrients, such as copper, chromium, and reduce the absorption of calcium and magnesium.
  29. Poor eye health (sugar makes eyes more vulnerable to age-related macular degeneration).
  30. Increases pain and discomfort which often lead to discouragement, hopelessness, and weak faith.
  31. The more sugar you eat, the more you want … it’s addictive. Uses the same pleasure pathway in the brain as cocaine, but sugar is more addictive!
  32. Excess sugar consumption goes against God’s design of your body and living a life of vibrancy. God never intended for us to consume such massive amounts of sugar as we see today. It’s another ploy of the enemy to rob us of the abundant life Jesus came to give us.
